By organisation size

Audit duration depends mainly on the number of people, sites and shifts. Certification bodies calculate it with IAF criteria (IAF MD 5 for duration and MD 1 for multi-site sampling); in internal and supplier audits I apply the same logic so results are comparable.

SizeUsual approach
1 to 100 peopleOne or a few sites. One to a few audit days, usually with a single auditor.
101 to 200 peopleSeveral days or several visits; sampling of processes and shifts.
201 to 300 peopleAnnual programme with audits by process or site throughout the year.
301 to 500 peopleSite sampling in multi-site organisations and, if needed, an audit team of several people.
More than 500 peopleMulti-year programme, audits by site and process, and coordination with the internal quality team.

Impartiality, confidentiality and method

  • ISO 19011 method: risk-based programme, audit plan, objective evidence and graded findings.
  • Impartiality: I do not audit systems I have implemented or advised on. In certification audits on behalf of a body I also apply its impartiality requirements under ISO/IEC 17021-1, which prevent auditing an organisation advised in the previous two years.
  • Confidentiality: NDA before receiving documents. Reports belong to the client.
  • No conflict with certification bodies: the certification decision always rests with the accredited certification body.
